Christmas Letter 2024

Enjoying the Seattle Christmas Market this December

Merry Christmas, friends and family! 2024 was a whirlwind for the Rusek household. We started the year off on a cruise and we ended the year on a cruise. I'm not sure we know how that happened, but I blame my travel agent sister for our increase in cruises and fun! Last Christmas we were at my sister's home in California celebrating Rodney's first Christmas. This year we will be in the same place enjoying some California sunshine.

Before we went on a cruise in January we managed to squeeze in Rodney's baby dedication at our church. Rodney is our little miracle baby and we are grateful for a supportive and prayerful church family. Abbie had a first in January: her first haircut! I took her to a special kid's haircutting place rather than attempt cutting her hair myself to ensure her first haircut looked very cute!
Our first family cruise left out of Galveston which isn't far from where Korben and I used to live. We went out a week early to see friends and family in the area before hopping on a Royal Caribbean cruise to Roatan, Honduras, and a couple ports in Mexico. My parents came, my aunt and uncle as well, Korben's mom, and my sister (the travel agent, Joni!) and we had a great time. Royal Caribbean is very kid-friendly. We had a balcony view of the inside of the ship right where the carousel was (yes- a carousel!), which Abbie made sure to ride multiple times each day. It had an ice skating rink where Abbie tried out ice skating with all her family members who have much better balance than I do! Rodney had just learned the bum-shuffle as his preferred means of getting around and he enjoyed scooting all around different areas of the cruise ship. Our main dining area was three stories high and we were always seated on the top floor. Rodney sat in his high chair near the balcony with a view to the floors below and chucked a butter knife over the balcony. Luckily it fell onto a ledge on our floor and didn't stab an unsuspecting victim two floors below! On days off of the ship we were able to snuggle sloths, get robbed by monkeys, have parrots perch on us, do some snorkeling, and swim with manatees and dolphins. It was quite an amazing adventure and we weren't ready for it to end!

We celebrated Rodney's first birthday in Texas with my side of the family and Korben's mom came as well. There is a city park not far from my parent's home where we invited family and friends to join us. Rodney wore a little astronaut outfit and had an outer-space themed cake to celebrate his first trip around the sun! We arrived a little early to set up for the party and Abbie ran off to play on the playground. Right when the party was supposed to begin, Abigail was screaming and crying because she had slipped on some playground equipment and gashed her forehead open! Korben and his mom took Abbie to urgent care while the rest of us ate pizza and salad and tried delaying the cake as long as possible. Abigail returned just in time for cake, her head bandaged up and no stitches! I asked Korben to go over and take some pictures of the playground equipment Abigail had cut her head on. Nothing about it looked out of the ordinary- she must have just fallen strangely. About half an hour after Korben took the photos, a police officer came up to Korben and said Korben matched the description of a shady man taking pictures of kids on a playground! Korben, slightly panicked and slightly amused, quickly took out his phone and told the officer he could look at all the photos he took and explained the situation. The officer, seeing our three year old with a bandaged head, and glancing at the pictures of Korben's phone, decided that Korben wasn't a creepy pervert and let us enjoy the rest of the birthday party!
It's also worth noting that Rodney very wisely took his first steps on his first birthday, right in front of three of his grandparents who were thrilled for him! Rodney was less than thrilled about it and decided he would go back to bum-shuffling for another month.

In May we had decided that for Korben's birthday we would go up to Victoria, Canada and have a nice long weekend there. Korben's mom and my sister, Joni, and her husband, Greg, flew to Seattle to join us on our ferry ride over to Victoria. We packed up the car, just barely fitting all of us inside, and had a soft-top cover for the extra suitcases. The mall in our town has a little food truck inside that we really love so we decided we'd stop there for supper before heading on the two hour drive to the ferry terminal. While we were inside eating, our van was targeted by thieves who broke a passenger window and grabbed five backpacks out of our van. One of the backpacks had Korben's, Rodney's, Abigail's and my passports in it. Another bag had Korben's mom's passport in it. Abigail's cute little backpack was stolen and all it had inside was her tablet. Korben's laptop and tablet were stolen and his mom had two tablets stolen. Abigail was unconsolable when she saw the smashed window and we explained to her what happened. Thankfully, and I mean, really, truly with all the thankfulness I can muster, Meow Meow (her favorite kitty stuffed animal) was not in her backpack-- the stuffed animal was left right in the car to witness it all happen, although it's rendered speechless from it all. Joni and Greg didn't have anything stolen, but they weren't planning on going to Canada without us so we all pivoted our plans.
Korben's birthday is right around Memorial Day weekend which means everything was completely booked up. Luckily everyone had planned on staying for a few days longer than Memorial Day Weekend so we spent a calm weekend at out home and then after the weekend we stayed for a couple nights at the fun indoor waterpark, Great Wolf Lodge (even got a discount thanks to travel agent Joni!), and had a blast. Abigail is very fixated on going to Canada since we didn't get to go but I'm a little concerned that she thinks that Canada is another Great Wolf Lodge. Korben's mom was understandably stressed about her stolen passport because she was supposed to go to Europe in a few weeks, but thankfully Seattle is one of the few places in the country where you can get same-day passport service if you have plans to go on a trip soon so we were able to get her a new passport right away. Our family took much longer to get passports replaced, but we eventually did. The cops called Korben a couple weeks ago to tell him that they found his laptop in a a stolen vehicle. Nothing else that was stolen has been recovered despite the fact that we could actually track Korben's mom's tablet for a long time. The cops couldn't do anything about it.
This shave ice in Florida with MaRu was the BEST!

When summer arrived we flew to Florida to visit Korben's stepmom and show off the grandkids. It was really nice to see her for a few days before we headed off to Branson, MO for a Dickerson Family Reunion (my side of the family). Branson was really great, Abigail LOVED the alpine slide near where we stayed and somewhere in the air there you can probably still hear an echo of her screaming, "FASTER, FASTER!" While in Branson, Korben and I celebrated our 10th wedding anniversary! It was really great to see family and cousins and see the next generation of kids meet each other. Next time we meet up I'm hoping for a different souvenir to take home, though. Over half of our group caught norovirus and Rodney threw up all over me on the long flight back to Seattle!

My parents came out to visit us during an amazing PNW summer, but after only a couple days my dad needed to have emergency eye surgery. Since you can't fly on an airplane for weeks after getting eye surgery and they live too far away to drive back, they reluctantly decided to fly back home to get the surgery instead of getting surgery here in Washington. It was for the best and my dad ended up not being able to fly for a couple months, so we decided we would fly out in August to visit them in Texas which is probably the worst month to visit Texas, but it was a fun trip nevertheless. While there we went to a fast food place and my mom commented to me that it was a good thing I was driving because she had no idea how to get around. (I was driving her car in her own town, but if you know my mom this statement isn't surprising in the least bit). Abigail, in the back seat, was shocked at Mumu's statement. "Mumu, do you even know your stuff?!" she asked earnestly. Well, Mumu, Abbie's on to you!
A beautiful PNW day with my parents!

Korben's sister Ann and her family came out to visit us in September which was a nice treat! Her kids and our kids really enjoyed playing together and seeing some of the beautiful sites in Washington State. Korben's other sister, Sonja, also came out in September and we were thrilled to meet her husband and her new baby!

In October, Abigail celebrated her birthday at a park nearby with a friend of hers who is 10 days older than she is. They celebrated turning 4 and Abigail's one request for her birthday was that she could have an Octonauts cake and that she could dress as Kwazii. If you don't know anything about Octonauts or who Kwazii is, just ask Abigail, she can fill you in. Once we got to the park she caught a peek of her Octonauts cake and absolutely refused to play on the playground-- she was completely mesmerized by her cake. Kwazii is an orange cat in Octonauts who happens to be a pirate. Nobody sells a costume of an orange cat who is also a pirate. So she was dressed from head to toe in orange long underwear with an orange beanie cap on her head and a pirate eye patch on her eye. She also dressed like that for Halloween. Most people assumed she was a Jack-o-lantern! Rodney, for Halloween, was an orange shark because Kwazii, the orange pirate cat, happens to drive a submarine that looks like an orange shark. Absolutely nobody made this connection, nor did they immediately think Rodney was a shark since he was orange. So Rodney also got called a pumpkin, but he didn't mind. Rodney's teeth grew in the front and the back with gaps in the middle and he was definitely sporting a Jack-o-lantern smile so he was a cute little pumpkin that day. Halloween was also the first day he said, "Thank you!" when the last house we stopped at handed him some candy. Except it sounded like, "Doot doo!"

For Thanksgiving we went to Pennsylvania to be with Korben's family. A few days before we flew out we had a "bomb cyclone" that sent winds charging through the area we live. A fir tree in our neighbor's yard fell down on our house. Korben and I had just gotten the kids to bed despite the power being out and were relaxing in our bedroom when, "BOOM!"-- the loudest sound came above our heads. I freaked out and took off running through our completely dark house. Korben followed right behind me. We both knew a tree had fallen on our house but I was concerned it had fallen on Abigail's room because her room is on the second floor. But Abigail was sleeping peacefully, she didn't hear a thing. When we came back to our bedroom, we could see that a corner of the ceiling's drywall had fallen down, there were cracks in the wall, and one of the windows had popped out! The tree had fallen, mostly in our backyard, but one section of tree trunk had a direct hit on the corner of the master bedroom. It thankfully didn't hit Abigail's room because the upstairs sits back a little from the downstairs.
This picture was taken from our backyard just days before the tree fell down on the corner of the shed, the back porch, and the far corner or our master bedroom

The days leading up to us traveling to Pennsylvania were a blur. A contractor that we have been working with because we are planning on remodeling our kitchen drove from a couple hours away to temporarily fix our roof and keep rain water from pouring in. Friends from church came over to help chop up the tree in our backyard and clear it out. The tree smashed a corner of our shed and completely demolished our entire back porch. The tree was so tall that it even managed to hit the neighbor's garage who live on the other side of us! We put up temporary fencing to keep the dogs in our yard since the tree crashed through two different sections of fence. We probably would have had to cancel our Thanksgiving travel plans if not for the good Samaritans who came to help us get our house and yard secure!
A view from the other side of our backyard. It's just tree everywhere!

On our flight to Pennsylvania, wouldn't you know it, Rodney threw up on me simply because he gagged on a piece of fruit. I passed Rodney over to Korben so that I could clean up the vomit all over me, but Rodney wasn't done throwing up so he threw up all over Korben, like a LOT! We had already changed Rodney into his spare set of clothes because of a diaper blow-out situation an hour before so Rodney had to travel the rest of the way in just a diaper. When we landed we had to haul all our luggage into a family bathroom at the airport and change, much to Abigail's frustration as she had stayed vomit-free the entire trip. I had brought along exactly one coat which I had been wearing when Rodney vomited so I had to buy a new sweater in the airport. But we eventually made it out of the airport and to Korben's sister's home.
A view of the master bedroom from the outside all smashed up.

I celebrated my birthday there- Korben's family generously watched the kids for us so that Korben and I could go out and enjoy a meal just the two of us! And Thanksgiving was really nice. We did a turkey trot 5k that morning and Abigail walked and ran the entirety of it. Korben got 2nd place for his age group in the race. It was a lot of fun watching the cousins play together during the week of Thanksgiving. We also visited Gettysburg and even though our children went screeching and squawking through the museum so that our educational learning was limited, it was still a very fascinating place to see and visit.
Gettysburg!

We flew back home for almost a week- enough time for me to get a scheduled colonoscopy done! They gave me pictures when it was over (and I'm healthy!) but I've decided not to include them in the Christmas letter. And then off we headed to Florida for a cruise with Gam Gam, MaRu, Grandpa Bill, and Aunt Joni and Uncle Greg! This group was great for trivia games-- we won 3!-- but the prize was always a bottle of white wine which nobody in our group drinks! We went to the Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, and the last stop was supposed to be MSC's private island in the Bahamas but the weather was going to be bad so the captain changed it to St. Thomas in the U.S. Virgin Islands and WOW, I would definitely go back there! The cruising experience is nice with kids because you can still travel, see just a little bit of a place you've not been to before, and everything you need, especially with small children, is available to you. There is also an entire staff to clean your room twice a day, cook and clean your dishes, watch your kids if you like, and entertain you. It's the kind of spoiling experience you want your young children to experience so that they know-- this is as good as it gets-- it's all downhill from here!

We had a lot of other short visits with friends on weekends. We went to Walla Walla in the spring to see several friends there, we also did a Walla Walla University alumni weekend at Rosario Beach with friends at the beginning of fall which was really beautiful. We drove up to the Everett Children's Museum north of Seattle a couple times which is by far the cutest Children's Museum I've seen in the state. And I had a weekend visiting a friend with our kids in Coeur d'Alene while Korben had a boy's trip in a town nearby. And we are looking forward to spending Christmas with my family in California this year.
On a trip to see friends in the Houston area we stopped by the church in College Station where we met!

Korben has continued to work for Google. He goes into the office twice in a week and we really enjoy the fact that most of the time he can work from home. He hasn't had as much time for woodworking hobbies now that there are two little kids running around our house, but he plays online chess from time to time and does his math problems in textbooks "for fun!" He is an incredible husband and dad to our kiddos, but he did make a huge mistake this year. Rodney was in the bathtub and Korben mentioned, "You know what's interesting? Rodney has never pooped in the bathtub!" And just like that, Korben tempted fate and Rodney decided to put an end to that interesting statistic just seconds after hearing him say it.

I've continued to be a stay-at-home mom which has no pay, but I enjoy being home with my kids! It's exhausting feeling like I'm their entertainment 24/7 but the kids do often entertain themselves. I steal kisses from them as many times as I can and now sometimes when Rodney picks up his trains and plays with them, he makes the trains kiss which makes Korben look accusingly at me. But what else are you supposed to do when you are home with your kids all day? Clean? Cook? Korben wishes! I will steal as many kisses from them as I can.
Abigail has been becoming such a big girl this year. After she took a summer dance day camp she told me, "Mommy, you need to get this girl in dance!" She does a dance preschool once a week for a few hours and she desperately wants to go more often so she will probably do that starting in January. They also teach music so Abigail can now play Hot Cross Buns on the piano. She has also sang Jesus Loves Me in church and she will sing Away in a Manger for the church's Christmas concert. She's a brave and daring girl who loves the rides at the fair! She has taken bike classes through the Park and Rec center and has ridden a little bit on a pedal bike! She also really enjoys art class and she has started to sign her artwork with her signature: AbB. Because, as she explains, "My name is Ab and then B!" We also took her to her first concert, a Danny Go! concert which she absolutely loved. She was a little afraid to turn 4 this year because she said she really enjoyed being 3, but she has since decided that 4 is fun too. She declares almost every day as "the best day ever!" Abbie's favorite thing is to be a big sister and she is a fantastic big sister. She is Rodney's biggest cheerleader and she is excited that Rodney can play and communicate with her more and more. Does she sometimes attempt fratricide? Yes. But by and large she is a big sister who eagerly shares her food and toys, and showers little Rodney with lots of love every day.
Rodney, who turned 1 in March, has really started to show his personality and it has been so much fun to watch. He has shy and coy little smiles he will sometimes give to a lucky person. He has transformed from a very bald baby to a curly-topped toddler. Anything Big Sis does is absolutely hilarious to him, even if it endangers his life. He's very much into trains, planes, cars, tractors, and boats. He was absolutely thrilled when we were on a cruise this December and said, "Boat! Boat!" any time he remembered we were on a boat. He loves to do things independently and doesn't need me to entertain him all the time, but if I leave him unattended for a minute I might find him proudly standing on top of our kitchen stove! He's recently learned how to run which he puts to good use anytime I ask him if he needs a diaper change. During this year where he was learning to be more mobile he was also falling over and hitting his head, so he wore a soft foam helmet on his head to soften the blows. For a while the bumps on his head were so frequent that Abigail even drew a family portrait where she drew a large goose egg on Rodney's head! Rodney has also been able to communicate more and more this year. My favorite thing to hear him say is, "I uhv oo!" But I think his favorite thing to say is, "ABBIE!"
Rodney, in his helmet, looks a little like Toad from SuperMario Bros!

In more serious news with Rodney this year, he has had countless doctor's appointments for a few issues. He had an MRI on his brain to analyze his brain cyst, but so far it all looks just fine. Our biggest concern was that he wasn't gaining any weight. He was already hovering around the 5th percentile on the growth chart and eventually he just slipped off the growth chart entirely. We just found out that he has a genetic mutation that accounts for his lack of growth and most of the other health issues he's had. We will meet with a lot more specialists in the coming year to see how serious it all is, but for now it's not looking too severe (and we are unlikely to send him off to Professor X's School for Gifted Youngsters). We are grateful to have an answer and to be able to move forward and grateful that Rodney is a happy little toddler boy!

It's now nearly 2025 and I'm still signing dates as 2023 so I'm really not ready for it to be 2025, but here we are. We pray that you all have a wonderful holiday season and that 2025 is kind to you!

Merry Christmas!

Christmas 2023

2023: A Full Year of Blessings

In the Rusek household, 2023 was a very full year. We found ourselves counting our blessings and our miracles. The year has flown by but I enjoy our Christmas letters as a way to remember all the things that have happened.

Visiting the Northwest Railway Museum

Blessing #1: Family

Last Christmas my parents, sister (Joni) and her husband (Greg) came to visit us. I was hoping for a white Christmas but instead we had a very wet Christmas. Still, I was grateful my southern-dwelling family made the trek up north to us instead of us going down to them. For one thing, I was so enormously pregnant and uncomfortable that traveling had become quite difficult. For another thing, there were a number of house projects that remained unfinished just waiting for me to get enough energy to complete them (spoiler: that energy never came). My sister, Joni, like an ambitious elf, tackled these projects even through the late hours of the night and somehow convinced my parents and her husband to join her. Because of this Abigail was able to move out of the nursery and into her new, big girl room! She was ready to be out of her crib and in a real bed. The nursery sat empty waiting for our new arrival due in March.

Our other upstairs room across from Abbie’s big girl room housed a girl from Korea for a few weeks. We hosted her in January and showed her some winter sights the Puget Sound has to offer. After that visit my energy levels plummeted even lower than before. I couldn’t sit for longer than 20 minutes, I wasn’t able to drive, and lying down was the most comfortable position for me to be in and even then it was quite uncomfortable. If Joni and my family hadn’t come up and finished the little house projects when they did, our house wouldn’t have been ready for the new baby.

Blessing #2: New Baby (and Blessing #3: Not Being Pregnant Anymore!)

This pregnancy felt like a soap opera. We had gone from “Your baby might not make it,” to “Your baby has something very significant missing from his brain,” to “I think everything might be okay with your baby, but you probably have way too much amniotic fluid!” When my tests came back negative for gestational diabetes the doctors scratched their heads. They couldn’t figure out what the problem was, but what I could gather is that too much amniotic fluid is a bad thing in pregnancy. It also led to people asking me numerous times if I was expecting twins and even if I said no, certain people (my mom) would ask hopefully, "Are the doctors sure?" They kept telling me that the fluid would start to go down in my last trimester but it kept going up and up. I was beginning to feel like a blimp, but perhaps specifically the Hindenburg. Finally a specialist told me we needed to get the baby out when I was 37 weeks along. “I’m 37 weeks along right now!” I told her. Well, they couldn’t squeeze me into their schedule that quickly so we scheduled our baby to exit via C-section at 38 weeks.

Ready to not be pregnant!

At the hospital they prepped me for my C-section. It is an odd thing to know you are about to have major surgery and be awake for it. The table is in the shape of a cross and I had to lay down on it as if I was about to be crucified. A small drape kept me from seeing anything too gory. Korben sat right beside me, the drape also blocking his vision so he wouldn’t faint I suppose. As we waited for my torso to go numb the doctor started poking me with sharp objects. “Does this feel sharp?” she would ask. “Yes, on the right side,” I replied. They tilted the table with me lying on it to the side, I suppose to help the numbing stuff to get where it needed to be. The doctor asked me again if it felt sharp. “Uh, yes,” I replied again, thinking about the story I had heard a million times when my sister was born via C-section and my mom nearly jumped off the table because the anesthesia didn’t work on her at all! I heard the doctor say to the anesthesiologist that it was probably just nerves and they should just begin! It was an odd sensation of only being able to feel a painful cut on one side of my body. Then it felt like they were ripping my skin right open! I began waving my arms around and saying, “OWW! OWW!” I have no recollection of this but the anesthesiologist told Korben to hold my arm down and I was knocked completely out.

While I was in dreamland Korben was quietly panicking. He was holding the hand of his unconscious wife who was being operated on and listening to the nurses commenting, “It’s like Old Faithful back here! I’ve never seen so much fluid!” (I had at least 4 liters of amniotic fluid and a typical amount is about half a liter.) A red, swollen baby was suddenly displayed to Korben, but the baby needed to go to the NICU because he had swallowed some of that amniotic fluid. This all happened within the space of about 15 minutes. One of the nurses said to Korben, “It looks like he might have red hair! Does anyone in your family have red hair?”

Korben should have immediately said, “Yes, I have redheads in my family!” But instead he said nothing. He was still processing everything that had just happened and just stared at the nurse who was now beginning to think she had uncovered some deep, dark secret! She gave a look to another nurse when finally Korben said, "Uh, yes!"

“Did I fall asleep?” I asked Korben, finally coming to. The baby was already gone to the NICU which was disappointing, but I was glad our little baby was getting the help he needed.

Finally getting to meet Baby Rodney

Rodney Kent Rusek came into the world on March 13, 2023. He was born the day after the anniversary of the passing of Rodney Bryant, his namesake. Rodney Bryant was Korben’s stepdad through Korben’s childhood years until he passed away when Korben was a senior in high school. Korben wanted to pass along Rodney’s name to our son since his stepdad was so important and special to him. Our baby’s middle name, Kent, is my dad’s middle name so he has two grandfather’s names in his own. He was born at 1:03pm, 8 pounds, 11 ounces, and 20 inches long. For the record, Rodney’s hair seems to be coming in brown and his baby blue eyes have also turned brown. Those big, brown eyes are definitely something he inherited from me! He also has a very large head and it measured waaaay up there in the 99th percentile when he was born so let’s just say I’m grateful he wasn’t born the traditional way!

Little cutie in no rush to leave

If Rodney’s birth seemed dramatic, it was nothing compared to the NICU stay. Rodney loved the oxygen he was on and refused to get off of it. Every day we were told, “Just a few more days.” They moved us up to the pediatric ward which at first I thought was nice because it meant that we could all sleep and stay in the same room (the NICU doesn’t really have beds for the parents), but the hospital policy didn’t allow Abigail in the pediatric ward so I had to pick and choose which child to spend time with. That was awful! Rodney was there for 2 weeks before he was cleared to go home. And we were READY to go home!

Finally HOME!

Rodney, by the way, has been the sweetest little baby. If you are lucky, he will give you the smallest flash of his one dimple, usually because he's beaming with pride for his ability to sit up all on his own or if you help him get into a standing position. He loves to stare at everything with his big, brown eyes. At first I thought he was a much harder baby than Abigail had been because he didn't come close to sleeping through the night until he was nearly 6 months old (Abbie slept through the night at 2 months!). But Rodney has naturally done things that have made me go, "Hmm, maybe Abigail wasn't an easy baby after all!" He has been a champion napper and has no problem napping in his crib, very helpful when I need to chase a toddler around! He also does this thing where I can set him down for a second to get something done and he's just completely fine with it! Abigail needed to be held 24/7. He also doesn't mind riding in the car. We are completely in love with little Rodney and amazed at how different he is from Abigail already. But one thing they have in common for sure: they are both adorable!

Blessing #4: Family

Oh wait, that was Blessing #1? Well, it’s worth mentioning again. Korben’s mom, Gam Gam, came to visit to help us out with Abigail when Rodney was born. Thank goodness she was here! I don't know what we would have done without her help. We had no idea that we’d be in the hospital for two weeks and would need childcare for so long. Gam Gam luckily had planned to be with us for about a month anyway. Every day Korben would drive down to the house to pick Gam Gam and Abigail up, bring them to the hospital to see Rodney and me. We would eat hospital food and Abbie would play with me for a little while and then they would go home. Abigail was a really good sport in the first week of doing this, but by week 2 she was really getting fussy and missing us. The nurses encouraged us to go home and sleep so we did that twice and I’m glad we did. Abigail really needed that extra time with us.

Gam Gam was a lifesaver for us this year!

Rodney came home for good on a beautiful, sunny, flowering spring day! Abigail has been over the moon about Rodney since the day she laid eyes on him. I’m not sure that anyone is supposed to shower more praises over the baby than the parents, but Abigail has us beat. “Look at those widdle legs! Look at those widdle, giant eyes!” She often starts singing a sweet little love song to him out of nowhere. In the early days she would get so excited if he wasn't sleeping. "Are his eyes open?" she would ask. Her one concern has been that he was born without eyebrows which I assured her he does indeed have eyebrows even if they are hard to see. She used to wake up, run downstairs, look in the bassinet and say, “Oh, he’s still a baby? When he will be a big boy?”

Rusek, family of 4!

Blessing #5: Abigail

This was a huge year for Abigail. First she moved to her big girl room with a big girl bed. She made the transition seamlessly. Then she started to want to go potty on the potty. I was a little afraid of potty training before Rodney arrived because I didn’t want her to regress, however, if your 2 year old says, “I want to poop on the potty,” you don’t say, “Nah, I’d rather change that dirty diaper!” By the time Rodney was born she was doing a great job of using the potty, however she did regress majorly for a couple months. But now I can say we have successfully potty trained her! And by “we” I really mean “she” because she practically did it all on her own! She loves to be a big girl and basically doesn’t remember that she ever wore diapers or slept in a crib. She is Rodney’s biggest cheerleader and he gives the biggest smiles for his sister. Abigail also loves talking on behalf of her brother (I could also just say, “Abigail also loves talking.”). Abbie already has a pretty high-pitched voice but when she speaks on behalf of Rodney she raises her voice an extra octave to squeak out whatever she thinks he says, which is also funny because when Rodney does make noises he makes pretty low little grunts! Abigail will tell you that Rodney’s favorite color is red and that Rodney really likes trains and that Rodney likes to eat peas and on and on and on she goes. One day Rodney really will have something to say (if he can get a word in edgewise) and we’ll see if Abbie can appreciate him having his own opinions! But for now we are so glad she adores her baby brother. My day is mostly spent making sure she doesn’t smother him with her hugs.

"Holding" baby brother

Blessing #6: The Trips

I had really, really, REALLY wanted to go on a family trip before the baby came. Just one last little family outing of 3 before we became a family of 4. I thought we’d pop up to Canada for a weekend getaway. However, I was in so much pain and discomfort that even sitting in the car for 20 minutes was too much for me. We had to scrap that entire idea.

However, Korben and I had won an auction item at the end of last year that had us staying at Lake Chelan (a beautiful and extremely long lake on the sunny side of the Cascades) over Korben’s birthday at the end of May. Korben’s mom flew out and by then Rodney was 2 months old. The lake was beautiful and we got to visit a place I’ve always wanted to see, Stehekin. It is a very small town at the northernmost part of the lake and is basically only accessible by boat.

Riding the ferry to Stehekin with Gam Gam

My parents had been eagerly waiting to see their grandson and we flew down to see them in June. Abigail was overjoyed to see her Baba and Mumu (my parents) and Baba and Mumu were overjoyed to see Abigail and “her baby,” as Abigail describes Rodney. Rodney also got a chance to meet some extended family that lives in the area.

Baba insisted on fattening up Rodney whenever possible

At the end of July we flew to West Virginia where GamGam (Korben’s mom) is from so that we could meet some of her extended family at a family reunion. I had no idea West Virginia was so incredibly lush, hilly, and beautiful! From there we flew down to Florida so that Rodney could meet MaRu (Korben’s stepmom) and MaRu was pretty anxious to meet him as well! Korben’s brother and sister-in-law were expecting their third child and they live fairly close to MaRu. We had a lovely baby shower for them and looked forward to Rodney having a baby cousin close to his age!

Rodney meeting MaRu

From Florida we flew over to Phoenix where the Adventist Teachers Convention was. Although I am no longer working in the Adventist school system, I’ve always attended the teachers convention since it first began! I also thought it would be a good excuse to see my parents and friends and coworkers that I hadn’t seen in a while. My sister was also going to come out to help me wrangle the kids since Korben had to work during the trip. That would be her first time to meet Baby Rodney! It was wonderful to see everyone but Phoenix in August is pretty awful. We stayed indoors as much as possible. The Children’s Museum was by far the coolest one I’ve ever seen!

Enjoying being indoors while in Phoenix

In September, Auntie Joni came up for a short visit to see us. The fall was beautiful and I don’t remember her complaining much about it being too cold for her SoCal blood. Then GamGam came up and we drove down to Salem, Oregon. Korben’s cousin recently moved to Salem so it was nice to take a road trip down and see her and her family. It had been a while since I had visited Salem, a town my family lived in from my 8th grade year and through my college years. My old house has deteriorated however my old school got completely redone and looks very nice!

Visiting Silver Falls

In October we flew back to Texas to stay with my parents. We celebrated Abbie’s 3rd birthday while we were there and had invited friends we knew from Houston who drove the 4 hours up to see us! It was a lot of fun. Abigail has fallen in love with trains since she was given a train table over the summer by a friend who moved away. She became a huge Thomas the Tank Engine fan. She loves the show and we listen to the music from the soundtrack ALL THE TIME. It only seemed natural to do a train party for little Abigail. She was very excited to have a train track birthday cake and play with friends at the playground. A week later we went to an event called A Day Out with Thomas where we actually got to ride Thomas. Abigail absolutely loved it! When we got ready to leave we asked her if she wanted to say thank you to Thomas, which she did. “Thank you for a fun day,” she said to the happy-faced, blue engine. But before we walked completely away she had to run back to him and say, “Thank you for the music!”

Abigail enjoying her birthday!

We also went to the Texas State Fair. Abigail had, just a month before, enjoyed the Washington State Fair but we hadn’t taken her on any of the little kid rides because we didn’t think she was ready for them. But at the Texas State Fair we walked by the little kid section and Abigail immediately talked about how much she wanted to ride a roller coaster! I rode the kiddie roller coaster with her and she LOVED it! She wanted to try some other rides too, and she loved all of them! My favorite part was that she really wanted Joni, her 6 foot tall auntie, to ride with her on the little kid rides, and so I got to see my sister and her long limbs somehow squished into a toddler sized kiddie ride!

Joni could fit into this ride pretty easily!

Our most recent trip was to Georgia and South Carolina for Thanksgiving. We flew into Atlanta (an airport I would happily never go to again!) and we stayed with my aunt Mary and uncle John who I hadn’t seen in forever and then drove across the border to South Carolina to see Korben’s brother and sister-in-law who had just moved and recently had a baby. It was great to see everyone and Abigail had a fun time playing with her cousins! Rodney was happy to meet even more family on that trip!

For Christmas we will take our last trip of 2023 to California and stay with my sister. Her husband and his family will get to meet Rodney for the first time and my parents will come out as well. 2023 was a year full of travel once Rodney was born and as hectic and busy as it can be, I’m grateful for all the trips to see friends and family.

Rodney getting some attention from a cousin

Blessing #7: Health

Rodney’s pregnancy was an awful experience where thankfully every red flag was nothing but a red herring. I hoped for less stress after his birth but there were a few things that popped up. The first was his eyesight. He had some strange eye movements but they’ve mostly gone away and we will continue to keep an eye (no pun intended) on it. The second was his head size. He has a large head for his little baby body which raised some questions. An MRI scan of his head revealed an arachnoid cyst, I guess because he wanted to match his Mumu who has one of her own. The doctors said there was really nothing to be very concerned about, but we will have to get another MRI done next year which will involve sedating him. This is to just check the cyst and another spot they found that they also think is probably nothing. I’ve gotten a bit tired of doctors telling me to not worry about something that is “probably nothing, but could be something.” However, so far our little baby boy has been a miracle through and through and so many things have landed on “probably nothing.” We take each day one day at a time and thank God for our son who has brought our family so much happiness, as well as a few gray hairs.

Blessing #8: Time

2023 went by way too fast! I thought it would crawl by like it did when Abigail was a baby, but it didn’t do that at all, perhaps because I have a toddler in the house. I am so grateful that I can take the time to be a stay-at-home parent during these busy years and just be with my kids. We are also grateful that Korben’s work (Google) continues to let Korben work most of the time here at home. He goes into the office two days a week which is enough for him to enjoy seeing his coworkers and probably work with a little less distraction. He also has a very generous paternity leave which really helps a lot and it also allowed us to take travel time to see family members with less flexibility in their work.

Watching kids grow is literally watching the passing of time. Abigail is already 3 and Rodney, brand new to the world this year, is already past the newborn stage and has his eyes set on doing everything his big sister does. He wants to crawl and walk and with any luck he will be doing that soon. Abigail is a wonderful big sister who cheers Rodney on whenever he does the tiniest thing. She loves to help us out and claims she is the one who takes care of him (can’t say I ever saw her at any 3 am feedings, but okay). She can’t wait until he is mobile and can do all the things she can!

Our family got to be part of an interactive nativity experience at Auburn Adventist Academy Church called Journey to Bethlehem. I was Mary, Korben was Joseph, Rodney was Baby Jesus (you thought he already had a big head?), and Abigail was Baby Jesus’ Big Sister! According to the Bible, Jesus did have siblings so who’s to say he didn’t have a big sister named Abigail anyway?

We feel rather blessed this year with our second rainbow baby. The blessings and miracles don’t always come when we want them to, but we celebrate them when they happen! We hope to cross paths with you soon!

With love,

The Ruseks (Korben, Lori, Abigail, and our new member, Rodney! The dogs, Kepler and Anyong, and the cat, Grapefruit, send their seasons greetings as well.)

Christmas 2022

Well, I don't know about everyone else, but 2022 felt like a very busy year! It probably has more to do with the fact that we have a very busy toddler in the home and I've been pregnant for half the year than anything else. I suppose 2023 will be even busier with a newborn AND a toddler in the home and I'll look back at 2022 and think, "What a nice, chill year that was."

Visiting MaRu in January

Last Christmas we were in the Florida Keys enjoying time with my family. We got to go to Dry Tortugas, we saw manatees and alligators. We were enjoying the sun and sand while back home in Washington everyone was getting tired of the Christmas snow (which melted by the time we got back). Korben and I drove up from the Keys all the way north of Orlando to see Korben's side of the family. Abigail enjoyed being around all her cousins, but unfortunately caught her first case of cold sores and it was really bad! She was up crying during the nights (and consequently, so was I), and only wanted me to hold her during the day. She refused to eat or drink water, but she was still nursing at the time so thankfully that kept her from becoming dehydrated. We took her to urgent care in Florida and when we finally flew back home her fever spiked again and we took her to the ER. We're happy to say she ended up being fine and got over it after about a week or so.

Gam Gam and the grandkids

We were barely home from our Florida vacation before Abigail and I hopped on a plane again- this time we were off to Texas to see my parents. My cousin, Laura, had moved down to Texas and for her birthday a group of us went to the local theater to see a play. My dad agreed to watch Abigail and put her down for her 7pm bedtime. It was the first time Abigail would be put down for sleep by someone besides me or Korben. The play was fun and when we got back at 10:30 my dad was holding Abigail in his arms and she was still wide awake! He couldn't bring himself to put her in her crib in the dark and leave her there. I don't even know what to say about that except that I think becoming a grandparent transforms you into a big softie.

Abbie being spoiled by Baba

Even though we had missed the big Christmas snow last year, amazingly while we were in Texas we got to experience the rare Texas snowfall! We also celebrated by mom's birthday and I wasn't allowed to put her real age on the cake so I rearranged the number-candles and I don't think she minds if I tell everyone she turned 26 this year.

Abbie and Youthful Mumu

Spring was slow to come to the Pacific Northwest and it was a challenge finding entertainment for Abigail during the cool, wet spring days. We had won a vacation stay in Palm Springs through an auction, and it was certain to be nice and warm. It is also pretty close to my sister Joni and it was during my dad's Spring Break so we all came out to spend some time with Joni and Greg in Southern California. Unfortunately, the owner of the vacation home had accidentally double-booked his home and he had to scramble to find us another place in Palm Springs. It was still a nice place and had an awesome pool, but the owner of that home was very particular about not having parties. When a couple of friends of ours from Ohio just happened to be in the area, we invited them over to swim in the pool. The owner immediately contacted me to remind me there could not be any parties at her place at all. Turns out she lives across the street from her vacation home. I assured her they were only visiting for a couple hours. The next day I ordered food and when the delivery car drove up, the owner came out of her house, hands on her hips, to stare at the car and me until she realized it was just a delivery car and then smiled and waved.

Feeding giraffes at the Living Desert Zoo

Besides the AirBnB chaos, the trip was really nice. Oh, did I forget to mention that we also visited Joni while she was teaching in her classroom? My mom had exactly one job to do, and it was IMPORTANT. She promised she would do it. The job was to keep Abigail awake on the drive back to Joni's home from Joni's school. Abigail was finally transitioning to one nap, but if she fell asleep too early she would nap for five minutes and then decide she didn't need to sleep any more at all. This made the evening time a terrible time so it was CRUCIAL to keep Abigail awake on the drive back to Joni's place so that Abigail could take a real nap later. Did I mention my mom promised to keep her awake? Look, I think you know what happened next. My mom softly sang to Abigail, "Stay awake, little baby," in a lullaby-like tone and refused to do anything aggressive to keep her awake. I couldn't pull over and let my mom drive while I kept her awake because my mom's driving is, well, let's just say I don't know where we would end up! So again, I honestly don't know what to say except that it doesn't matter how strict a disciplinarian your parents were. When they become grandparents they melt into goop. And goop doesn't keep babies awake when they are supposed to. Which meant that Abigail napped for 5 minutes in the car and refused a real nap later. And yes, Abigail was terrible that evening. I don't think Mumu (my mom's grandma name) learned her lesson at all, but I did: Abigail's grandparents are untrustworthy!

The beautiful Rhododendron Gardens in Federal Way

Back at home, Spring was still reluctant to make an appearance. I enrolled Abbie into gymnastics and she LOVED it! She's got amazing upper body strength! We did a month of gymnastics and then quit because it was expensive and also she's pretty limited on what she could do as a one year old. We might try again later. Easter was a lot of fun for Abigail, she quickly learned what to do. We went to the Spring Fair. We played with the neighborhood kids. (We have awesome neighbors, by the way. One of our neighbors is a plumber which came in handy when Abigail dropped her electric nail trimmer into the toilet and I stupidly flushed it so it got wedged inside.) We went to the zoo several times. It's so much fun to watch Abigail's excitement about life and completely random things. The first time I walked her into the aquarium I excitedly pointed to the big sharks swimming right in front of us. "Oh!" yelled Abigail. She sees them, I thought to myself, and turned to look at her pointing at the letter O on the wall, completely ignoring the huge sharks swimming by. "O! O! O!"

Kalalau Lookout, Kauai

Korben's birthday is near the end of May. I asked him what he wanted to do to celebrate the big 40. He said he wanted to just stay home and have his family visit. Well, somehow Korben's wish turned into a trip to Hawaii with Korben's mom, Debbie. We were going to spend time on two islands: Maui and Kauai. Korben had never been to Maui and Debbie had never been to Kauai and I honestly can never get too tired of going to Hawaii no matter how many times I go (which is way too infrequent). It was a perfect trip (minus a hotel booking incident where we were briefly without a place to stay in Maui) and incredibly, nobody got sunburnt! Abigail learned that pineapples are pokey and that fingerling limes grown on my aunt and uncle's property are the most delicious things she's ever eaten! Debbie and Korben got some fantastic snorkeling in. I got to visit a couple places I never visited when I lived there (Fern Grotto and Makauwahi Cave Reserve). Korben had a great birthday, hosted by my aunt and uncle on their farm, despite not getting his wish to stay home. The fun trip all too quickly came to an end.

The Jurassic Park Trees at Allerton Gardens

Summertime in the Northwest is perfection. Abigail and I spent so much time outdoors enjoying the perfect weather. But my parents were eager to see Abbie again and in July we flew back to Texas to enjoy a Texas summer, extra hot! My parents have a little kiddie pool that Abigail played in every day. We also found a really cool KiddieTown place in the mall. It has kid-sized businesses, like a salon, an ice cream truck, a police car, a diner, and a big playground, all wonderfully placed indoors where the A/C blows. Abigail thought it was great fun to dress up and pretend to run several businesses in the town. She loved it so much that when we had to leave she threw a massive temper tantrum, a taste of the two-year old tantrums to come! Baba (my dad) enjoyed playing in KiddieTown with his granddaughter. I think the highlight of the trip was going to the waterpark by Baba and Mumu's home, minus the part where I slid down the kiddie slide and bruised my tailbone!

Baba visiting Abbie's bakery

The rest of the summer was really nice. Google lifted its Covid restrictions so Abbie and I were finally able to see the inside of Korben's office building. It's right off of Lake Union in Seattle. Korben showed us the game room and the kitchens where he gets free food, but we have yet to actually see his desk where he supposedly works!

A view of Lake Union from Korben's work

We took a weekend and went down to Tillamook where I preached one Sabbath. We stayed in a super cheapy hotel that was actually kind of a perfect location because it was right next to an old steam engine that gave people rides to the beach and back. Abigail thought it was awesome! And we, of course, went to the Tillamook Cheese Factory, which has gotten bigger and fancier since the last time I was there (almost 20 years ago)! A good friend of mine from high school happened to also be on the Oregon coast that same weekend so I was able to meet up with her and her kids. It was a really fun getaway!

Perfect weather at the Oregon Coast

It was around this time that I was getting kind of nauseous and discovered I was pregnant. The summer was still going on: there were berries to pick, the weather was perfect, and I had been wanting to work on stripping and repainting some furniture to use in Abigail's big girl room, but morning sickness slowed me down. I've thrown up a lot this pregnancy, which is about the same as when I was pregnant with Abigail. Abigail was either pretty upset with me for running to the toilet to puke every hour, or she was fascinated and watched with amazement as I curled over the toilet. When people talk about that "pregnancy glow" I suppose what they mean is that constant pale-green tint in my nauseated face.

Puerto Vallarta, Mexico

Somehow September came upon us and we had had a Mexico trip planned with Korben's family. It seemed good to go ahead and announce to the family that I was pregnant because otherwise they would certainly discover it in Mexico. Of course, everyone was thrilled. Puerto Vallarta is a part of Mexico I have never been to before. The flights to Mexico and back would be Abigail's last free flights and that was honestly fine with me. She has gotten so big this year and sharing a seat with her gets uncomfortable. Recently Korben told me he thought his phone was broken. "Why?" I asked. He replied, "I took a picture of our baby, but my phone is showing me a picture of a little girl!"

The A-Team: Aiden, Addilyn, and Abigail

We visited Puerta Vallarta during the rainy season. It was lush and green and tropical. The ocean was a little murky and choppy because the rivers dumped rain water into it, but it was still very pretty. The hotel had its own restaurants, all which advertised gluten free food. "Ask about our Gluten Free options!" every menu said. When I asked about the gluten free options they would say, "Oh, yeah, we don't have anything." I'm pretty sure I got glutened a couple times there, but it's impossible to know for sure because with morning sickness and all of our group catching Montezuma's Revenge I had a hard time distinguishing the reasons as to why I was throwing up. Abigail's cousin, Addilyn, was the first to fall for the miserable stomach sickness, followed by Abigail (a discovery I made while I was carrying her and she vomited all down my back). I was the first grown-up to catch it, no surprise. But I was feeling pretty good by the time most of the adults in our group had it.

Vallarta Botanical Gardens

Despite the sickness that went around, we were still able to do quite a few cool things. The botanical gardens were probably my favorite. On the day I was really sick I stayed behind at the hotel with Grandpa Bill while the rest of the group went on a boat ride and did a little snorkeling. The hotel wasn't really a bad place to be stuck. Up on the 11th floor we had a really good view of the ocean and the entire town was decorated for Mexican Independence Day. On a day where I was feeling better my brother-in-law, Josh, took us all on a hike that had a viewpoint of the entire town. He neglected to tell me that the hike was essentially straight up, which was difficult for my pregnant body, and so by the time I reached the summit I threw up, which I am sure was greatly appreciated by all the other people who had climbed up there to enjoy the view.

Abigail copying Daddy at the lookout

The end of the trip was eventful in all the wrong ways. We were at the zoo and I was sitting down when I felt a rumbling, and no, it wasn't my stomach. The animals started all making noises at the same time. "Does anyone feel the ground shaking?" I asked. Nobody except Ann, my sister-in-law maybe felt the ground shake. And anyway, it was over, whatever it was. We finished looking around at the zoo and headed back to a hotel in a taxi. At the hotel there was a massive crowd of people standing outside. I asked the taxi driver what was going on (Mexico was a great place for me to practice my rusty Spanish) and he told me they were all out there because of the earthquake. So it had been an earthquake! But we realized that the tiny vibration barely felt over at the zoo had been completely different at the hotel. Bill had stayed at the hotel and said the shaking went on for a good 5-10 minutes! We looked over at the hotel and along the walls there were large cracks spanning across several levels, pieces of stucco and glass had broken off onto the parking lot. When the hotel decided it was safe for us to go back in, we could see the hotel lobby had pieces of art decor and wall tiles on the floor. One of the elevators was out of order. We were seeing a lot of things that didn't instill much confidence in the structural integrity of the building- and may I remind you we were up on the 11th floor! I pulled out my phone and started looking for other places to stay, but as luck would have it, 4 people in our group suddenly started throwing up, finally having caught the same stomach sickness others had already had. Nobody was super eager to leave except for me. So we went to bed that night praying that the building would stay intact.

Wall tiles that fell during the earthquake

Around 3 in the morning Korben and I woke up to the room shaking. Korben doesn't easily wake up in the night, so I was surprised that he was feeling the shaking too. I was strangely calm, despite believing right then that the building was falling down and went to grab Abigail. In the next room over, Ann and Josh thought a tsunami had hit the hotel and they went racing outside, Addilyn following behind, but their youngest, Aiden, left behind and sleeping soundly in the room. Debbie and Bill didn't feel a thing. I don't think if the building had been falling down or if a tsunami had hit the hotel that we were doing anything to actually keep us alive. I think the lesson here is don't have emergencies at 3 in the morning. Anyway, it ended up being just an aftershock. The building stayed up all night and the night after. Then we flew home and we could all say that we were legitimately grateful the vacation was over!

Enjoying the dahlias at a nearby garden

Our fall was unseasonably warm, which was perfect because I still needed to do that furniture project in Abigail's room. Unfortunately the warm weather also brought along fire season and the air was filled with smoke so I didn't get to do the project. The smoke was still in the air in October, but it wasn't terrible for the weekend of Abigail's birthday so we had a little celebration in the neighborhood park. She still talks about her "2 year old birthday," the gifts that she got, and her birthday shirt that has a kitty cat on it. We did a kitty cat theme because earlier this year Abigail was in a garden nursery shop with me and they had a shelf of stuffed cats. Why they had stuffed animals in a gardening store, I'll never know, but Abigail fell in love with a little brown kitty cat and claimed it by slobbering all over it so I felt obligated to purchase it. The neighbor girl suggested Meow Meow as the name of the plush cat and it has stuck, mostly because Abbie was able to say the name. Meow Meow has gone on all our trips and heaven help us if we ever do lose Meow Meow. One time Abigail left Meow Meow on a toy shelf in Wal-Mart. I nearly had a heart attack, but Abigail knew exactly where she had left him. Abbie loves kitty cats and while she loves ALL her stuffed animals, she has an inner circle. All the cat stuffed animals are part of that inner circle, but Meow Meow, he gets the innermost part of the inner circle. So it was a no-brainer to have a cat-themed birthday party. Abigail loved it! She also loves being two and everything about the number two (yes, including any poop pun you want to make here). She can hold up two fingers and if you tell her to eat her food she will tell you she will take two more bites. If you are feeling old, call up Abigail and ask her how old you are and she will tell you, you are two.

Abbie riding her "psych-e" from Gam Gam

Before October ended, I planned a quick trip to Texas and Florida again. I had been scanning all summer long for good flight deals, but ticket prices were outrageous. It had been a few months since my parents had seen Abbie and it had been WAY too long since MaRu (Abigail's name for Donna, Korben's stepmom) had seen Abigail. So it was important to get out there even though it meant Abbie and I going on another trip without Korben because he had to work. I was a little worried because on the last flight I had taken with just Abigail it had been a little miserable, but this time Abigail would have her own seat so maybe it wouldn't be so bad. On the flight to Texas, Abigail was the model of toddler perfection. So many people came up to tell Abbie how well-behaved she was, and she really was. We had a nice visit with my parents and even Joni and Greg were able to come out from California. Then Abbie and I flew from Texas straight over to Florida (again, the model of toddler perfection in the airport and plane) to see Donna. Korben's mom, Debbie, was also in town and we made it a girl's trip. The two grandmothers showered Abigail with toys and attention and Abbie loved every minute of it. It was a really nice trip, perfect actually. Little did I know Abbie's spectacular behavior was a set-up.

Visiting a fun playground with MaRu and Gam Gam

The short version of the trip back home from Orlando is that Abigail decided her days of toddler perfection were over and she'd take a shot at being the exact opposite of that. And, well, she's pretty good at it. She ran away from me 6 times in the airport, mostly in the security line which made everything take longer. It didn't help that we had already arrived a little late to the airport due to a miscalculation I had made on how long it would take to get there. I was limited on what I could do to keep her in line. I could hold her, but my pregnant belly means she can't sit on my hip anymore and I get too tired. I also had to lift suitcases on and off the belt and that meant that Abigail had opportunities to escape, and she used them. I gashed my foot against one of the suitcases and it was bleeding. Abigail was screaming bloody murder in the airport because she kept getting into trouble. I was about in tears and knew it wouldn't take much to send me over the edge. Well, we missed our flight by one minute and that was more than enough to send me over the edge. If I had been embarrassed by Abigail screaming in the airport earlier, I was 50 times more embarrassed that I sobbed at the gate when I realized we missed the flight. But I should stop here and mention that people are really, really nice. If anything, my faith in humanity was restored by how people reacted to both me and Abigail. Also, I was flying Alaska and they have amazing customer service. Even though it was my fault for missing the flight, they made arrangements for me at no extra charge. Abigail and I were on a flight to Portland half an hour later, and then caught a small plane to Seattle just before midnight West Coast time. It was a long and awful excursion home and I swore off traveling with Abbie alone ever again. I thought it was a pain traveling with babies (and it is), but traveling with toddlers is 300 times worse.

A chilly fall day to visit a farm with the cousins

If you thought that was the end of our travels this year- NOPE! We took a trip to Pennsylvania to see Ann and Josh for Thanksgiving and of course Debbie (called Gam Gam by her grandkids) was there  too. We did pretty good traveling with Abigail on the plane. Two adults can handle a two year old, I guess. And considering how much traveling Abigail and I did this year, I was surprised we hadn't caught covid. So naturally a couple days after being in Pennsylvania at Ann and Josh's house Abigail tested positive for covid. Well, that threw a wrench in our Thanksgiving plans, but honestly despite all the sickness going around, we still had a really nice time with family. And I reminded the group often (this is the same group we were with in Mexico) that at least this time there were no earthquakes! We celebrated my birthday with pumpkin pie and Ann had even made a really yummy gluten free chocolate cake. Abigail was so ecstatic to be around her little cousins again and by the time I had come down with covid and was feeling terrible, I didn't have to entertain my toddler because the cousins were up to that task. By the time our return flight was scheduled, Abigail and I were feeling pretty good, but Korben was feeling crummy so we extended our stay at the ever-hospitable Enevoldson home a couple of days longer. Korben, finally feeling better, decided to take a nice, warm shower and slipped in the tub, landing on his side. It could have been a LOT worse, but he definitely bruised his ribs, a convenient excuse for him to not help with Christmas decorations when we got home. (Is this what 40 is? Falling down in the shower? Maybe I need to get him LifeAlert for Christmas.)

Like Father, like Daughter

Korben, despite trying his best to break his ribs, has had a good year. He's enjoying working at Google and typically only goes into the office 2 days a week, working at home the rest of the time. I'm glad he gets to work from home, especially during my worst morning sickness days when all smells (including Abigail's poopy diapers) made me puke and all I wanted to do was sleep. For awhile, Korben was taking care of a toddler and me all the while attempting to work from home! He still finds time to go on runs and has recently gotten into playing online chess in what little free time he has. He hasn't had as much time for house projects (more to my dismay than his), but he did put down hardwood floor in the upstairs bedroom that Abbie will soon be moving into. Abigail is for sure a Daddy's Girl and has her daddy wrapped around her little finger, and Korben loves every minute of it.

Just another day in Mom's life

I'm still enjoying being a stay-at-home parent, although being pregnant with a busy 2 year old takes up all my energy completely. This pregnancy has been challenging and stressful to say the least, not just on me. Into my second trimester the doctors found fluid built up in the baby around his brain and one of the lungs. It was a very scary time and we weren't even sure the baby was going to make it (or if the baby did make it, perhaps wouldn't live very long). Miraculously (and I do really mean miraculously) the fluid places disappeared, but we weren't out of the woods because they kept saying that something didn't look quite right with his brain. Eventually they told me to get a fetal MRI done, but even though most of the doctors I had been working with told me to be cautiously optimistic, one doctor I saw right before the MRI sat me down and told me that I needed to prepare myself to hear that our baby didn't have a CSP in his brain. She explained that the CSP is basically like a superhighway that connects the left and right brain hemispheres. This was devastating news. But the fetal MRI showed that the CSP is there! By the time this baby is born Korben and I are going to have gone completely gray. But we thank God every day for watching over Baby Boy Rusek.

Due date March 24

Abigail is enjoying being 2, and is definitely living the two-year-old life. Overall, she's been a very easy kid. She isn't picky (except for tomatoes which she calls "no-matoes" and grapes) and loves chomping on onions, mushrooms, pickles, radishes, and spicy foods. She likes to go to sleep early and sleeps through the night. She likes to be a little helper (and she sings, "Abbie's a little helper, helper, helper!" while she helps you do something). She is a little sweetheart, and sometimes during the day she will tell me I am kind, sweet, and beautiful. But she is more than capable of throwing a temper tantrum of epic proportions should she need to! Just the other day she got into trouble for not listening to me and she went into her room, sulking. She stuck her head out of the doorway a minute later and said, "Mommy, NO, bad!" There are times she's talking to me and if I don't respond in half a second she will hold her hand to her ear and say, "Mommy, need to WISTEN!" She's gotten really good at talking this year. She started out the year at a Curious George level of speech (mostly grunts) and is currently at an Elmo level of speech (she can talk in complete sentences, but has an aversion to personal pronouns). The first sentence I heard her say was to our naughty dog, Anyong. "Anyawn BAD, no do dat!!!" We realized that maybe we need to say more nice things to Anyong! The sweetest thing she will tell you if you are lucky is, "Abbie wuvs you wif ALL MY HEART!" She might also add that she loves Meow Meow with all her heart, or that she loves pot with all her heart. For some reason Abigail calls meat "pot." We don't know why, but she does. And yes, she's a total carnivore at heart. However, we live in the greater Seattle area and she will eventually need to learn to say "meat" instead of "pot."

Abigail's suggestion on what to name Baby Brother was "Sister!"

We lost a pet this year. My Siamese, Brewster, who was at least 11 years old, suddenly lost interest in life. Tests were run and everything seemed fine, but he wasn't acting fine and completely stopped eating and drinking. I guess he decided it was time. He was such a cute, playful, and loving kitty. I adopted him from my aunt around the time I started dating Korben. Brewster always loved Korben more than he loved me. He had beautiful blue eyes and loved to be outside. Unfortunately he started peeing in the house and we never really could get him to stop, especially when we moved into our current house. He didn't adjust well to Anyong and he really didn't adjust well to Abigail. The worst he did was pee on Korben's head while Korben was laying in bed! We got his problem somewhat under control with antidepressants- something I never dreamed I'd be giving a pet- but it was never totally resolved. After he passed we thought, "At least the peeing in the house is done." No. The dogs have been marking his old spots in the house as if in his honor. We can't win.

The highlight of our year has really just been looking at life through the eyes of our two year old, who finds joy and excitement in everything. You might not think that a leaf or a cough drop or the sound of an airplane is particularly exciting, but Abigail will make you change your mind about that. Every day she makes us smile, and every day we are surprised by something new she has learned. Abigail's three things she wants to leave you with are, "See you waiter, croc-a-gator! Merry Miss-miss! Wuv you wif ALL my heart!"

Love,

Korben, Lori, & Abbie Rusek (& baby boy Rusek on the way!)
